Smoke Alarm Installation & Compliance
WA regulations require mains-powered, interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms. Many older Wembley and western-suburbs homes still have battery-only or non-interconnected alarms that don't meet current standards.
I install compliant systems — hardwired, interconnected, properly placed, and certified. Essential for sale or lease, and the right thing to do for your family.

Selling or Leasing? Compliance is Mandatory
From 2022, WA requires all sold or leased homes to have compliant smoke alarm systems — mains-powered, photoelectric, interconnected, and less than 10 years old. Non-compliant homes can't legally settle or be tenanted.
WA Smoke Alarm Requirements
Current regulations specify where alarms must be, what type, and how they must be connected.
Bedroom Placement
Smoke alarms required in every bedroom, not just hallways.
Interconnected
All alarms must sound together when one detects smoke.
Mains-Powered
Hardwired to the electrical system with battery backup.
Photoelectric Type
Photoelectric alarms detect smouldering fires better than ionisation.
Under 10 Years Old
Smoke alarms have a 10-year lifespan and must be replaced.
Living Areas
Required in hallways connecting bedrooms and main living spaces.

Smoke Alarm FAQs
What are the WA smoke alarm requirements?
WA requires mains-powered, interconnected smoke alarms in all bedrooms, hallways, and living areas. Battery-only alarms are not compliant for sale or lease. Alarms must be photoelectric type, less than 10 years old, and interconnected so all alarms sound together.
Do I need to upgrade my smoke alarms?
If your home has old ionisation alarms, battery-only units, or alarms over 10 years old, they need replacing. If you're selling or leasing, WA compliance is mandatory. I can assess and upgrade your system.
How long does smoke alarm installation take?
Installing a full interconnected system in a 3-4 bedroom home typically takes 2-4 hours. Replacing existing hardwired alarms with new compliant units is faster.
Can you test my existing smoke alarms?
Yes — I test function, age, type, and interconnection. Many older homes have the wrong type or non-interconnected alarms that wouldn't provide proper warning in a fire.
